Aussie couple in Bangkok bag-tamper marijuana scam scare
A Melbourne couple say they were fortunate not to have fallen victim to tough Thai drug laws after marijuana was planted in their luggage.
About to check in for a flight from Phuket to Bangkok, the couple noticed their bags were overweight, but it wasn't until they realised that one of the bags was missing a lock and part of her boyfriend's suitcase had been cut through. that they thought something was strange.
They took their bags to a nearby hotel and, after a search, found marijuana in a small pocket of a bag inside woman's suitcase.

She suspects that she and her boyfriend were victims of a scam that should have involved fake police or customs officers.

Rag - scary stuff.
Pity the article doesn't report when/where the bags were out of the couples sight - hotel, taxi, airport and which hotel they stayed in. You also have to wonder if the 'officials' involved the scam were fake. If they were about to check in where would they have come in to contact with fake officials? Outside Bangkok airport possibly but you have to wonder?

Phuket's Tuk Tuks being phased out but no progress in sight
All 1100 tuk-tuks on Phuket are being converted to the 11 seater Suzuki tuk-tuk model, (see photograph), which is said by its driver to be the first of its kind on Phuket.
There are at least 10 of the larger, cheaper Suzuki tuk-tuks operating now on Phuket with the Daihatsu tuk-tuks all eventually destined for the scrapyard.

Rag - no great improvement in my book. What Pattaya is screaming out for is a replacement for the old style Baht Bus taxis and the same could apply to Phuket. The Suzuki is same old, same old. How tourists figure out how to use the Baht Bus style of taxi I'll never know.
To me the obvious answer is the electrical samlor/Tuk Tuk. Environmentally friendly, can maneuver in Pattaya's small sois, can pick up passengers without stopping the flow of traffic and can operate point to point, door to door, making things easy for tourists. It's also uniquely Thai, (well Asian), and would have plenty of tourist appeal. A number of Baht Buses could be retained to operate from 3rd Road and beyond.
The major stumbling block for change in Pattaya is the ever powerful Baht Bus Taxi mafia. Rumour has it that the mayor who breaks their monopoly will live an interesting but short life...... Baht Bus it is then.....

EU Ambassadors address Phuket scams
You know you have problems when 18 EU Ambassadors unite to request the following:
- An efficient and fairly priced public transport system in Phuket which is available to foreign tourists and residents alike
- An end to intimidatory and violent behavior by an element of tuk-tuk and taxi drivers
- Strict enforcement of marine safety standards, including flags on beaches to indicate when it is safe to swim
- Strict enforcement of standards of behavior for public officials, including police and immigration, to ensure that foreign visitors and residents feel protected, treated in a fair way and never at risk of extortion
- An end to scams involving hiring of equipment such as jet skis or motorbikes
- Strict enforcement of road safety regulations
- Promotion of environmental issues, including monitoring of water quality.
I've been reading elsewhere on the WWW that long time residents of Phuket are selling up and moving out. It seems like this jewel in the crown of the Thai tourist industry attracts nothing but bad publicity these days.
