Thailand - Scams and accidents scare away tourists
Thailand's attractiveness to foreign tourists is under threat from fraud and poor safety standards.
After a recent bus accident in Chon Buri that injured 26 Russian tourists, the Russian Union of Travel Industry (RUTI) recently urged Thai authorities to improve safety standards, or face a possible boycott by its members.
The RUTI also reportedly demanded the Thai government solve these issues by the end of November, otherwise it will consider taking action to maintain the safety of Russian citizens. This action could include cancellation of all scheduled charter flights from Russia throughout the period of December 2013 to March 2014.
Officials from the TAT and the ministries of Tourism and Transport will hold a meeting on November 26 to discuss the Russian complaints, according to Transport Minister Somsak Pureesrisak.

Higher alcohol prices in Thailand after midnight Tuesday
Drinkers are going to face higher prices on beer, wine and liquor after midnight Tuesday, following cabinet approval on new alcohol tax rates.
The maximum tax for beer will be maintained at 60% of the product's value, but the effective tax rate per litre of 100% alcohol content will rise from 100 baht to 300 baht.
The tax hike will effectively drive up beer prices by about three to seven baht per bottle.
In terms of alcohol content, all wines will now be taxed at 1,000 baht per litre of pure alcohol, up from 100 baht.
The Finance Ministry will release full details of the new tax policy on Wednesday.

I'm watching EPL on Thai CTH
Thanks to Rag reader Terry W., I had two CTH satellite boxes installed at my home today just two days after placing the order. Looking good, bye bye Truevisions.

It cost me Bt1,500 for two boxes, Bt500 for two HDMI cables and Bt250 for a cable splitter. That was it, no charge for cable and no obvious charge for labour. Could I have bought the HDMI cables and splitter cheaper elsewhere? Possibly, but the guy did such a good job I didn't quibble.
Everything's installed and I haven't paid anything yet for the channel package. On top of that, the satellite guy went to CTH Laem Chabang to pick up the CTH boxes and had them coded at the shop. I believe the coding normally happens after installation and you can wait days for the technician to turn up to do the job.
There are 274 channels, at least half of which are in Thai. No problem for me as there are more than enough English channels to keep me happy. What's the 'Men' channel all about I wonder - beautiful women sitting around in their underwear. Might be of interest if I was in Saudi but I can't see it having much value to the male population of Thailand......

Amazone Cartoon Network Theme Park, Bang Saray, Thailand
Scheduled to open late 2013.
Amazone will be Cartoon Network's first water park, with rides inspired by the channel's most popular characters, including Ben 10, The Powerpuff Girls, Johnny and Johnny Bravo.
Younger visitors can play on what will be the world's largest interactive play fortress, while elsewhere there'll be a lazy river, speed-racing slides and an enormous wave pool.

Internal Security Act imposed in Bangkok
The Thai authorities, fearing violence at an anti-government rally on Sunday, have placed three districts in Bangkok under the country’s Internal Security Act (ISA) until Aug 10. These districts are Dusit, Phra Nakhon and Pomprap Satruphai.

Thailand, holiday in hell or paradise?
From a drunken student wounding 3 tourists with random gun shots, to a Russian being slapped around the face with a fake revolver, to the Evil Man of Krabi, to train derailments and coach crashes. Is Thailand becoming a riskier destination for foreign visitors?
This recent rash of negative reports has prompted Deputy Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul to issue a statement assuring the world that tourist safety was one of the government's top priorities.
Rag - It should be a priority given the importance of the tourist dollar to the Thai economy. Between bad publicity and developers eating away at Thailand's coastline, Thailand needs to be careful it doesn't become a transit point to neighboring countries.

More Brits Dying In Thailand
British officials have faced a startling rise in the number of deaths and hospitalisations of British citizens in Thailand, newly-released figures show.
Deaths jumped from 296 in 2011-2012 to 389 in the year ending April 1 this year. Hospitalisations rose from 217 to 285 in the same period, the official statistics show.

Visit of 4 top Euro teams will cost 1 Billion Baht
Visits by four of Europe's biggest teams will cost close to Bt1 billion, but Thailand gets little lasting benefit
This issue came into sharp focus again after Singha Corporation revealed they paid around Bt400 million for the visit by Manchester United and Chelsea, with whom they have lucrative sponsorship contracts as global partners. It meant the total cost for bringing the four clubs to Thailand could be just short of Bt1 billion.
But that sort of money could yield a massive improvement to Thai football if spent on facilities or local development.
Would it not be wiser to spend such vast sums on something more tangible than just brief appearances by star players?
