A solution for the Pattaya Monorail fiasco

Bus that travels over traffic..... Perfect for Pattaya Beach road, maybe....

In August, Shenzen Huashi Future Car-Parking Equipment unveiled its design for a commuter monorail that used the space between traffic and bridges. In a sense, the bus would straddle over its four-wheeled brethren at a rate of 25 to 50mph. Construction reportedly starts in Beijing's Mentougou district by year's end, but what of the rest of the world? Designer Song Youzhou has founded US Elevated High-Speed Bus (Group) Inc which, as the name would suggest, is on the look-out for manufacturers to build (and outlets to sell) the so-called straddling bus to the proper locales. Extra-Tall Trucks (and Low Overhead Bridges), shouldn't be a deterrent.

Samsung Galaxy Tab - Review

The Samsung Galaxy Tab is the first major tablet release since the Apple iPad launched about five months ago.

It's been a long time coming, too. The Galaxy Tab was one of the all-time worst kept secrets in tech until it was finally unveiled at Berlin's IFA show back in September, and as the first major Android tablet release, it holds a weight of responsibility on its shoulders.

With a tidal wave of Android tablets about to sweep through the tech world, it's possible that if the Galaxy Tab were to disappoint, it could damage the perception that Android tablets will be able to top the iPad on features and performance.

The price certainly indicates that Samsung believes the Galaxy Tab can topple the Apple iPad from its tablet tower. The 16GB model costs £530, which is £100 more than the Wi-Fi only version of the iPad. It is, however, exactly the same price as the cheapest 3G iPad, which is clearly no accident.

That price doesn't include any 3G access either, so if you want web connectivity on the go, it's going to cost you a monthly fee from one of the mobile networks. Prices will likely start at around £10 a month for 1GB of data.

This pricing strategy is slightly surprising - the Android tablet would be a lot more appealing if it was a bit cheaper than the iPad.

Samsung's decision no doubt also has something to do with it not wanting to undercut the cost of its own Android smartphones, but it's a big risk.

We liked:

The Android interface is fantastic, and in indoor conditions everything works pretty well. The screen is bright and colourful. Watching videos and listening to music is easy, as is transferring content to and from the device.

The Android Market enables you to customise the device beyond recognition, and so you'll never get bored of it.

The size has its benefits, too. It's a lot more pocket and bag friendly than the iPad, but it's still a pretty hefty object to have to lug round with you everywhere.

Flash support is a major advantage over the iPad, and the ability to surf online video is very well received.

We disliked:

The sluggish web browsing is very frustrating. As Google readily admits, Android 2.2 is in no way optimised for tablets, and so we can't help feeling that the Galaxy Tab has come along a bit too early.

The screen is also quite disappointing. It's not terrible, but it's in no way a class-leading piece of glass. With the 7-inch screen, it's an incredibly portable device, and so an AMOLED screen would have gone down a treat.

The camera, too, is fairly poor. Again, it's nice to have this feature, but remember this is a £530 gadget. It's expensive, and so you expect all the features to be top-notch... But they're not.

Verdict:

We can't hide our disappointment in the Samsung Galaxy Tab. It had the potential to deliver a serious blow to Apple's iPad sales. But in truth, the Galaxy Tab is no match for the iPad. It's nowhere near as smooth, it's not as polished and remarkably, it's not even a match when it comes to value for money.

If portability and Android are your main concern, the Galaxy Tab is certainly a handy gadget to have in your geeky arsenal. But for £530, we were expecting a hell of a lot more.

Rooney's planned departure from Old Trafford - The Source exclusive.

A distant cousin of the tea lady at Old Trafford has given Pattaya Rag a Rooney exclusive via The Source.

Rooney and Ferguson have agreed a deal that satisfies both the player and the club. Basically, it is a repeat of the deal struck with Ronaldo when he wanted to leave Old Trafford. The benefits of the 5 year contract to both parties are:
  • Rooney get's an immediate salary increase
  • Rooney can continue to play for the club
  • Mobs no longer demonstrate outside Rooney's house
  • Rooney's sale value rises as he is now on a long term contract
  • The club maintains it's status/reputation by resigning their star player
Now to the Ronaldo factor. Rooney will be allowed to leave at the end of the season. Fact. The club get a bigger transfer fee and Rooney gets a percentage of that larger fee. Everybody's happy but the mugged fans at Old Trafford.

Remember you read it here first. The Source has spoken.

Thailand - Smoking in public places

It's been obvious from my last few trips round the bars that smoking in bars is once again the norm. Smokers seem to be in the minority but still in sufficient numbers to stink up the place.

I've no problem with people wanting to smoke it's just their need to share their habit with me that I take exception to. I wonder what would happen if I sat next to a smoker and cut open a Durian. Would he sit there politely like a non smoker or would he complain? Complain methinks.

I guess it'll continue until the 'boys in brown' start carrying out raids to supplement their income.

Would bars allowing smokers please post the following sign so I can then decide if I want to drink there.

UK Privacy Watchdog to Investigate Google

The UK Information Commissioner’s Office is to investigate search giant Google over information it gathered from wi-fi networks via it’s Street View project, according to the BBC. No “significant” personal details were recorded at the time, but Google has since admitted that some emails and passwords were copied.

On its official Google blog, senior vice president Alan Eustace wrote that the company was “mortified” to discover, after the initial investigation in May, that personal information had been collected. What is clear through all of this is that there was no intent by Google to collect that data, and that it was done accidentally.  It is also clear that the company has not used the data for any purposes, commercial or otherwise.

Ed. 'Google were mortified fo discover.....' Pull the other one Google, you knew exactly what you were doing and you may not have used the info yet but you will do. Don't forget, from Google search, Chrome browsing, G-mail, G-mail contact lists, Android, maps, Google Docs, Google Checkout, etc., etc., Google know everything there is that's worth knowing about you. They know where you are in real time; who your friends are; what your interests are; the state of your finances.... need I go on. The worrying part is they have gone on record to say they will share their info with Government departments. That's why nothing will come of a Commissioner's Office inquiry. Governments want the info more than they want to protect civil liberties.

Game show hostess shock and awe

This made me laugh.

Rooney WILL quit United in January

Wayne Rooney will quit Manchester United following a series of explosive rows with manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Talks over a new contract that would keep Rooney at Old Trafford for the peak years of his career have broken down - paving the way for the 24-year-old England international to leave United in the January transfer window.

The warring duo have barely spoken since Rooney returned from England duty last week.

Club insiders accept that Rooney’s relationship with Ferguson is beyond repair after they clashed over recent revelations about the England international’s sex shame and the subsequent decision to leave the striker out of United’s team.

Ed - It has to be true, it's a Daily Mirror exclusive.....

Todd Phillips Talks Thailand And 'The Hangover 2'

With Due Date on the horizon, Todd Phillips is ready for The Hangover 2 and has confirmed that it will take place in Thailand. Which means, we will see things that can never be unseen. Things that involve donkeys.

"It takes place in Bangkok and LA. There's gonna be some f***ed-up surprises. The three guys are back. Mr. Chow's back too."

I'm kind of grossed out by this movie already. I'm walking into this with the same anxiousness and dread I feel before watching a Japanese horror film. Popular activities in Thailand include sex with lady-boys and watching strippers eject peeled bananas from their hoo-has, sending them flying a good fifteen-feet across the room. So help me God if Galifianakis eats that banana. (Empire)

Friend of Pattaya returns home

Patrick Deknuydt, a friend of many a Pattaya regular and responsible for much of the success in the Atlantic, U Too and Club Blu bars is back in Pattaya.

Patrick has a little black book full of ladies telephone numbers that is worth it's weight in gold. He makes the call and before you know it, he has all the best looking girls working for him again.

With that in mind, you should maybe note that Patrick will be working in U Too Bar again, (opposite Alcazar) from Octobet 7th. I know Patrick's many friends will make a beeline for U Too but if you don't know him still go. You won't be disappointed. See you there.

Footnote: The photo must have been touched up. It makes him look almost handsome!!

Boob job in a bottle: The £125 gel that says it'll make you a half-cup size bigger

It promises to spell the end for push-up bras, padding and expensive silicone implants.

A small tube of cream dubbed the ‘boob job in a bottle’ can increase a woman’s bust size by half a cup, if its makers’ claims are to be believed.

And at £125 for a 100ml pot, it is a far cheaper option than spending thousands of pounds on breast enlargement surgery.

Women using the gel rub it into their chest every day for less than two months, after which, manufacturers Rodial claim, their bust will be firmer and up to two-and-a-half centimetres larger while skin will be less wrinkled.

The cream, called Boob Job and already on sale in John Lewis, contains natural chemicals which supposedly increase the number of fat cells in the breast.

Celebrity devotees of this type of treatment are said to include actress Scarlett Johansson, Victoria Beckham and Kelly Brook.

Via Mail Online

Ed. I'm thinking what's to stop me rubbing the cream in my own private bits. Firmer and an extra 2.5cm would be nice but fewer wrinkles would be awesome.
