Cowboy Taxis

A regular commentator on Pattaya Rag has advised me that he arrived with 2 friends at BKK around 9.00am and went upstairs for a taxi. A price to Pattaya was agreed but then taxi only went about 3 miles from the airport before the driver swerved off the highway and drove in to a back lot. He said 3 Thai men demanded full payment even though they'd only gone 3 miles. My friend and his pals refused to pay and the Thai guys eventually backed down. He's not sure what would have happened to a tourist travelling solo.

I guess the only way to avoid this is to pay Bt3,000 for an official limo. Or at least take a photo of the car number plates with your smart phone and e-mail them to a friend for insurance. Make sure the driver sees you taking the photo. Might not help you but at least they'll find the driver!!!!!!!

20 of the best Christmas movies ever

Already gagging for a slice of Christmas that doesn't involve shopping, do-gooding or even standing up? Well fasten your sleigh belts, crack open the mince pies and get your couch ready for Stuff's top 20 Christmas movies..

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

The skully but undeniably friendly Jack Skellington has been forcing families together in front of the telly in a half petrified, half bemused embrace for nearly two decades now – is this not the true meaning of Christmas? And seeing as Tim Burton seems only able to produce films with Helena Bonham-Carter in these days, this is one to watch, if only for old times sake.

To check out the other 19 movies go to Stuff.TV

Time Magazine's Photo of the Week

Bangkok gears up for F1 show

Ratchadamnoen Klang Avenue will be closed next Saturday - not for planned demonstrations by the red or yellow shirts, but for an exhibition of Formula One driving.

Although only a show for F1 world champion team Red Bull Racing, co-organiser Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is confident it will be an adrenaline-pumping event for motor sports fans.

The event, the first of its kind in the capital, will give Bangkokians the chance of a glimpse of an expensive race car in their own city, said Deputy Bangkok Governor Taya Teepsuwan.

The idea of turning Ratchadamnoen Avenue into a race track is not new. Prince Birabongse Bhanudej Bhanuban - better known as Prince Bira - planned to close roads in the Sanam Luang and Ratchadamnoen area in 1939 for a "Bangkok Grand Prix".

But Prince Bira's dream was dashed when World War II broke out.

Saturday's show is part of City Hall's efforts to help realise the late Prince Bira's dream, Ms Taya said.

More than 10,000 people are expected to book their places along the sides of Ratchadamnoen Klang Avenue to see Red Bull racer Mark Webber drive his RB26 car on the 107-year-old road.

The three-lap course will get under way at Phan Fa Bridge, pass Democracy Monument and circle at Khok Wua intersection where the race will also finish.

Red Bull Beverage Co executive Chalerm Yoovidhya told a news conference last week the event was aimed at celebrating His Majesty the King's 83rd birthday and also to commemorate Prince Bira.

"Red Bull cars have been on show in several places and cities around the world - from a frozen lake in Canada to a beach in the Dominican Republic," he said.

"It's time for another special show on the historic street of Ratchadamnoen."

Ratchadamnoen Klang Avenue will be closed from 2pm to 3.30pm with a considerable number of security officers at the event.

FBI, DEA, & Homeland Security investigate Russian crime in Thailand

by Richard S. Ehrlich

BANGKOK, Thailand -- America's Federal Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Administration, Department of Homeland Security and other agents are investigating "Russian organized crime networks" who are murdering and stealing in Thailand's most popular tourist beach resorts, according to a U.S. Embassy cable released by WikiLeaks."A number of U.S. law enforcement agencies are involved in investigating or monitoring cases involving Russian organized crime in Thailand, in cooperation with Thai partners, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Department of Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

"These law enforcement agencies report that criminal networks composed of mostly Russian nationals operating in Pattaya and Phuket are responsible for the commission of numerous crimes, including extortion, money laundering, narcotics trafficking, real estate fraud, financial fraud, human smuggling, pandering, counterfeiting, document fraud, cybercrime, and illegal importation of cars," plus killings.

"While much of the Russian organized criminal activity in Thailand has occurred quietly, three specific cases generated public awareness of the phenomenon. In April 1998, Russian restaurant owner Konstantine Povoltski was found shot dead in a car near one of his two restaurants in southern Pattaya.

"In August 2003, police apprehended three Russian bank robbers when their speedboat ran out of fuel, after they held up the Bank of Ayudhya in South Pattaya, stole 2.4 million baht ($80,000) and killed a Thai police officer in the process. Rinat Koudaiarov was sentenced to death for the shooting.

"In February 2007, two Russian women were found murdered on the beach of Jomtien 10 km (six miles) from Pattaya, amidst speculation that it had been a Russian OC [organized crime] ordered hit."

The U.S. Embassy also scrutinized Moscow's influence on Bangkok's economy, diplomacy and culture.
