Pattaya Bar Scene - January 14

I had a wander around the Walking Street bars last night and Casanovy and Happy were again playing to full houses. What's Up was almost full whilst Peppermint, Sisterz and Dolls House were short of staff and as a result, short of customers. In fact none of the bars seemed to have their 'A' teams back on display but some were fairing better than others with their 'B' teams. Namely, Casanovy and Happy.

As we were on the street between bars, a dog pack of Thai guys attacked a farang and gave him a beating before a couple of Thai girls stepped in and broke it up. What started it I don't know but the girls ended it. Maybe that's one thing the dog pack is scared of. A pack of Thai girls.

The best fun of the night was in Honey Pot, Soi 2 around 8.15pm where we were the only customers in there for the best part of an hour. They have a number of hotties and they were all happy to chat and play while the bar was quiet. Also called in U Too Bar opposite Alcazar on Second Road and that was packed out. There can't be many busier off Walking Street bars than this one. Plenty of pretty girls, plenty of TVs, plenty of pool tables and plenty of space seems to be the winning formula here. Sounds easy doesn't it !!!!!

  • The Bus Operators Association of Thailand will request permission from the Transport Ministry to raise bus fares again due to the impact of rising global oil prices. busthai

“There is a strong chance that the price of diesel will further increase and could push past the 30 baht per litre mark,” the association’s President, Suchinda Cherdchai said.

“We would like authorities involved to consider granting bus operators another fare hike. This time, we will most probably propose a hike of more than 3 satang per kilometer.” [via Bangkok Post]

  • Thai Airways is eyeing April as the month to start services from Bangkok to the island resort of Samui, but only if they can secure attractive landing times, reports local papers.Thai President Apinan Sumanaseni commented to Bangkok Post that they were looking at morning flights out of Bangkok at 7am or 8am, due to a large number of European flights arriving at 5am and 6am.

He said, “Without a proper flight window we might have to abort plans to fly to Koh Samui.” [via eTravelBlackboard]

  • Thai Airways International attributed flight delays in the past week mainly to dense fogs at Suvarnabhumi Airport, which forced the airline to land a number of flights at other airports.

  • Brilliant idea. That was my first thought when I heard about Overstream, a service where users can add subtitles to videos found on popular video portals such as Youtube or Google Video. I can see two major applications for this website. The first is to create subtitles from videos and offer them to users that speak a different language. video_portal_subtitles

It would be a great service for his visitors if a Spanish webmaster would add Spanish subtitles to English videos that he found on Youtube for instance. The second is to create new content by adding the subtitles. This can be done in a humorous way, to add a comment or additional sources.

The interface of Overstream is easy to use. Users have to signup to be able to add subtitles to videos though. Once they are logged in they can use a url from a supported video portal to create a video with subtitles. The video is loaded into the interface and subtitles can be created by choosing a interval on the timeline. By default all subtitles remain for three seconds on screen which can be changed in the interface to suit your needs.

Basic video controls are available to test the subtitles. The user can stop, pause, forward, rewind and play videos. Videos can then be saved and are published on the Overstream website. Another nice feature ? You can load and save subtitles in the srt format.

The only downside at the moment is the lack of videos on the website. Roughly 900 are available which is probably the figure that gets added to Youtube each minute. [via gHacks]

  • It has been a long time ago since I last reviewed the TVU Player, a popular software that streams tvu-playerTV to your computer, most call it Internet TV. I decided to download the latest version and see what has changed since my last review and I can promise you that some of the changes are really exciting.

The new TVU Player interface hosts more information than the previous one. A remarkable change is the language and topics bar at the top which filters channels by their language or topic. If you only want to view English channels for instance you click the English button and only those are displayed.

The same principle works for topics such as Sports or News. The right pane hosts messages, reviews and the tv guide which is probably the most useful of the three. You can select your timezone and get information about upcoming shows on the tv station that you are watching. [via gHacks]

  • According to a new survey, 11 percent of all Americans between the ages of 18 and 24 could not find the United States on a map of the world. How pathetic is that? President Bush commented on this today, he said, “Why do we need our kids to find the U.S. on a map? They’re already here.” [via Jay Leno]
