Thaksin Makes The News

Deposed premier Thaksin Shinawatra said he harbours no ill-will toward the generals who deposed him and if permitted back in Thailand, would like to invite them to a game of golf and call a truce.

"I would invite them to play golf with me. Then, it will be over," Mr Thaksin said in an interview broadcast in Hong Kong on Wednesday. He added that revenge would solve nothing.

He dismissed speculation that he would seek revenge against the generals who ousted him.

"What would I get out of it? I might feel gratified but the country would be damaged," he said. [via Bangkok Post]

It agreed that cabinet members wear black for 100 days while general public are persuaded to wear black for 15 days like government officials. [via Bangkok Post]

  • Rumours are circulating on the boards that the bars might be closed for 15 days in honour of Her Royal Highness but there was no evidence of it tonight on Walking Street. It was business as usual

  • I had a wander round the Walking Street bars tonight and they were all running on minimal staff. One bar-keep said his girls are all barf'd out till Jan 13.

  • 336 killed and 3,984 injured in accidents over the New Year's holiday. Drunk driving was responsible for 42% of the accidents. [via Bangkok Post]

  • Coyote Blu is starting to take shape and with it's picture windows, (and are they small dancing stages in the windows), it's got a bit of the Honey Pot about it. Suits me fine as I'm a fan of the Pot.

  • Thailand's average headline inflation is expected to accelerate to 3.0-3.5 percent this year from 2.3 percent in 2007 and compared with 4.7 percent in 2006, the Commerce Ministry said on Wednesday. Oil-stoked inflation is expected to average 3.0 percent in 2008 and that may prompt the Bank of Thailand to start tightening monetary policy by raising interest rates in the second half of this year, analysts said. • Interesting article over at the Download Squad where they list the 5 most annoying programs. They call it Elephantwear, a very fitting description for programs that make your feel like your computer is not that fast anymore even if it is state of the art. Their top 5 consists of Adobe Reader, Apple’s iTunes, Real Player, Internet Explorer and Outlook.

Ed. I use alternatives for all but Real Player. My choices are, Foxit, Media Monkey, Real Player, Firefox and Thunderbird. If anybody has a good alternative for Real Player then please let me know. In my opinion, all these alternatives perform better than the Elephantwear versions in terms of speed, functionality and ease of use.

  • For all you DJ wannabees, maybe - announced back in May, the Pacemaker sounds like an amazing gadget: a 120GB portable music player that functions like a portable DJ mixing table. Essentially, it plays two tracks at once and lets you crossfade between them, plus play with effects like looping and pitch bending. Check out the Flash demo here. There's also a software application, the Pacemaker Editor, that functions like a traditional music player and library manager (think iTunes, Windows Media Player, or WinAmp), only with support for creating mixes. The Editor should be out now, according to the Web site.

The release date for the device itself has already been postponed from November to December to February. The only in-depth review I could find was of a prototype. But here's the really weird part: if you want to buy one, you can't just wait for a release date and go to a store or order it online. Instead, you have to pre-register. According to the auto-response I got, registrants can expect receive an e-mail some time in January asking for payment in full of 520 Euros (about $760). Then, they'll ship you one. All this sets my alert system a-tingling but the demos look great. [via Crave]

  • The only thing worse than people who tailgate are those people who won't get out of my way when I get right behind them.

What a year it has been, 2007

Britney finally divorced Kevin,MBwelcome

Anna Nicole went to heaven

And Rudy continued to talk 9/11.

Socialite Paris went to jail,

Pal Nicole spent 10 grand on bail,

Alas, Sanjaya's rise was a fairy (and pony) tail,

Yet over the Journal, Murdoch prevailed.

Mark Cuban finally learned to dance,

Sarkozy ended his French romance.

Larry Craig claimed that he had a wide stance,

After inviting a cop to the party in his pants.

Petraeus claimed, "We are winning the war"

And Imus called for racism, no more.

The Nobel Peace Prize went to Al Gore,

And property investors became suddenly poor.

OJ was busted for taking back his stuff,

Even Michael Vick's dogs had it rough,

Barry Bonds was questioned for being too buff,mbaird01

Sports fans, this year, had it tough.

Harry Potter's final fate was creatively penned,

But Eliot Spitzer could not keep up his trend.

The Minneapolis Bridge did more than just bend,

Sadly, Virginia Tech came to a horrible end.

Tragedy struck with the California fire,

Months before writers protested in choir.

In politics even Oprah tried to inspire,

And for all, the iPhone was the IT thing to acquire.

Finally, as the year came to a close,

Benazir Bhutto was killed by her foes,

Delivering to the world a few hard blows.

Leaving us to wonder, in 2008, who knows?
