Loy Krathong

The annual Loy Krathong festival will take place in Pattaya on Monday 2 November.

Nong Nooch (Oct 31) and Alangkarn (Nov 2nd, 5.00pm) are putting on special shows for Loy Krathong and City Hall will hold it's annual Loy Krathong event on Monday evening at Bali Hai pier.

Loy Krathong is a time to be with your loved one or ones, if you can get away with it.

It's my favourite Thai festival. All over the country, you will find Thai ladies in tradional dress and it really is a sight to behold. As are the floating lanterns.

Electronic Rock Guitar Shirt

guitar_shirt

Bored. How about strumming on a fake guitar on your shirt.  It has all the major chords and plays them out loud for all the world to hear.  Whether they like it or not.

The major chords that you have will allow for you to play a great deal of classic rock songs.  That or you could just randomly hit buttons and make everyone around you completely annoyed.  There is a mini amp that comes with the shirt.  It has a tone nob that allows for you to turn the volume of the guitar up and down.  The amp can be clipped to your belt.  You can purchase the shirt and amp set for $29.99 from ThinkGeek .

Ed. Perfect for a bit of busking on the Sky Train or Walking Street. When the BIB turn up, you just have to leg it. No gear to slow you down. Love it, if it works but I wonder what happens when it rains? In fact can you wash it? Maybe but you'll have to retune the shirt afterwards!!!!

Robbo Robson's Blog - Extracts

If you like your sport then you'll love Robbo Robsons's blog. The following are just a couple of paras from his latest post which is funny all the way through, if you're not American that is. The comments at the end of his post are worth reading too if you go there. Enjoy.

Ed

I enjoy the competition these days. All right so the big squads use it as a testing ground for some of their lesser lights - and Stoke do too. Although Tony Pulis making 11 changes is not quite the same is it? Might as well have sent his team out on to the Fratton Park pitch with 'spank me' sewn into the back of their shorts.

Even Kanu was able to burst clear of a static defence with 10 minutes to go and Nwankwo looks increasingly like a giraffe about to hit the deck under the influence of a recently fired tranquiliser dart. But there seems to be a spirit to the League Cup matches which is lacking in the Premier League grind and often in the FA Cup, too.

Blackburn did well despite the swine flu concerns. Rovers could be so infectious they've been warned against gobbing on the pitch as it could spread the porcine pandemic even quicker. I knew there was a reason why El Hadj Diouf wasn't playing, eh?

But even more shocking this week was Andre Agassi's revelation that he took summat called crystal meth with his pal 'Slim'.

Apparently he felt great afterwards and was overwhelmed by a desire to do a lot of household cleaning. Crikey. I'm not touching the stuff then. A lunchtime pint on a Saturday is enough to get our house dusted and utterly sterilised. (I do the pint, the wife gets a monk on and takes it out on Mr Sheen.)

Posters on my previous blog have suggested that this drug-taking explains the marriage to Steffi (which is unfair to the great Ms Graf, particularly as she's doing her best in the Number 10 shirt at Liverpool.)

Add Your Facebook Events to Google Calendar

Blogger and techie Sean Bonner offers a dead simple way to keep all of your Facebook events synced up with your Google Calendar so you don't have to manage two completely separate social calendars to keep your days straight.

Even if you don't use Facebook all that often (or maybe especially if you don't), this is a nice option. Once set up, you can check one calendar (your Google Calendar) to see what's going on with your Facebook friends and with whatever else you've hooked into GCal. Getting it set up is simple:

  1. In Facebook, go to your EVENTS page.
  2. At the top of that page click EXPORT EVENT
  3. You'll get a pop up window with a URL, copy it.
  4. In Google Cal, on the bottom left you'll see ‘Other Calendars' and below that a link to ADD. Click ADD
  5. One of the new options you'll be presented with is ADD BY URL, select that
  6. Paste the URL from Facebook where it asks for it.
  7. Fin

I never check my Facebook events calendar until events pass me by, but I'm always keeping an eye on GCal. After performing this simple setup, you won't need to worry as much about missing an event just because you're not all that big on Facebook.

BTIT Part 8 - Prison Special

Big Trouble In Tourist Thailand Part 8 consists mostly of footage of 'farang' inmates from earlier programs. Little new is added apart from an interview with one of only two English girls in Thai prisons.

When the prison clips are shown all together they make a fairly forceful statement that crime doesn't pay in Thailand. Unless you're the BIB that is. That's the message the production team have left in quite possibly to the detriment of the 'farang' prisoners. Basically put, you have one chance to buy your way out of trouble, so don't miss it if you have the money. Once in the system, you're lost.

It's hard to say if a program like this would deter genuine tourists. My gut feeling is probably not as the majority of visitors come here for sun, sand and possible XXX. They don't come here with the intention of crossing the law.

With the exception of the father/son held for the ATM scam, all other inm ates would appear to be a 'fair cop'. It's not a case of tourists being framed which would worry all tourists. Well, not framed/conned like a sailor hiring a jet ski... and I think that's where we came in.

Want some fresh air? Get these indoor plants for your home

I came across a very interesting presentation by environmentalist Kamal Meattle who talks about how you can grow your fresh air at home and office using some commonly available indoor plants .

Best Indoor Plants for “Cleaning” Air

The three indoor plants that Kamal mentioned in his TED talk include:

best indoor plants

1. Areca Palm - You need at least four shoulder-height plants per person in the building and, if you are living in a polluted city, make sure you wipe the Palm leaves every single day for the plant to effectively convert Carbon dioxide into Oxygen.

You should in fact grow two sets of Areca Palm’s -- keep the other set outdoors and rotate that set with the indoor one every 3-4 months.

2. Snake Plant -- Unlike most plants which release Carbon-dioxide at night, Snake Plant (also known as Mother-in-law’s Tongue) does the reverse as it converts CO2 into Oxygen at night so you can safely keep it inside the bedroom.

You need at least 6 to 8 waist height plants per person to improve the indoor air quality to a healthy level.

3. Money Plant -- Other than releasing oxygen in the air, money plant can also eliminate formaldehyde from the air that is commonly released by cigarette smoke and adhesives (used with wood furnishings).

Money Plant is therefore especially useful in office buildings as they generally have lot of wooden furniture.

HootSuite - Awesome Twitter client

Twitter is an awesome social networking tool but one of the first issues I ran into in when using Twitter was how to follow so many people and actually keep up with what they are saying.  Come to find out, there are many tools out there to help sort out the noise and organize your followers and those you follow.

One such web-based tool is HootSuite. Yes, it’s web-based, meaning you can sign in almost anywhere there’s an Internet connection, unlike TweetDeck which is a desktop program. These days, there are many different web-based Twitter clients being made but HootSuite stands out from the crowd for it's function and form. I'm a fan.

Michael Jackson's 'This Is It' movie opens October 28th

For more info on the movie go to Rotten Tomatoes.

Theatre date for Thailand to be confirmed.

Given how big a star he was, it's strange how unfashionable it became to play his music. Yes, the scandal(s) didn't help but this was the biggest star on the planet bar none. His absence from the charts and concerts over the last few years can hardly detract from the  outstanding body of work he produced over 35 years. Sinatra and Ray Charles had their skelatons but they're still revered.
Where did MJ go wrong. After all, he's no Gary Glitter and his music hasn't aged badly like Saturday Night Fever (SNF). I mean SNF was massive at the start of the 80's and I loved it then but when I hear those high pitched vocals now I could scream. Wonder why the Bee Gee's didn't name themselves the Aee Cees....
Anyway, back to MJ. I reckon he deserves a break. I for one will go to see his movie just to see if produces the magic one last time. I have to say I'm not optimistic as I suspect the movie is just one more attempt to make money from his name. Let's hope not.

Just in time for Halloween: Scott Mendelson's 10 Best Modern 'Direct to DVD' Horror Films.

Here are the best of the worst, straight-to-DVD horror films that genuinely deserved to go to theaters and are actually superior to most of what Hollywood calls mainstream horror in this day and age.

Without further ado (in alphabetical order) the movies are:

2001 Maniacs (2005)

From Within (2008)

Frontiere(s) (2007)

À l'intérieur (American title- Inside) (2007)

Mega Snake (2007)

Midnight Meat Train (2008)

Midnight Movie (2008)

Murder Party (2007)

Simon Says
(2006)

And now, the very best direct-to-DVD horror film of them all...

The Children (2008)
First of all, this is the best 'evil child' movie ever made. Released just weeks ago as part of a four-film Ghosthouse Underground series, this British chiller rules the roast with thoughtful, well-written characters, a slow sense of building menace, and a terrifyingly plausible premise that compliments a polished and stylishly directed motion picture. The Children is not th e most violent film on this list, nor is it the goriest or the showiest. It plays like a drama for much of its running time, and it haunts because.....

Facebook Adds Digital Music to Gift Store

lala-260

Imagine being able to gift a track to a friend on Facebook. Now you can, thanks to today’s Facebook announcement of a revamped gift store that includes a music selection powered by Lala .

For one Facebook credit (10 cents), a “web song” can be played back online forever, or for 9 credits ($0.90) the track can be downloaded and transferred to other computers or devices. It could mean significant dollars for both Lala and Facebook both if the latter’s virtual currency and gift store economy take off. And with the success of virtual goods sales and app stores paving the way before them, it’s easy to see how they might.

BTIT Part 7

After expressing relief last week that Big Trouble In Tourist Thailand was over it turns out that there's a Part 7 and possibly a Part 8.

Part 7 aired last night and mainly comes across as a day in the life of Howard. He's everywhere. Lots of petty crime and an amusing spot on two Brits who've settled here and found a new lease of life. Reckon they'll both take flak from friends for their comments.

On the petty crime front it looks like bar bill runners are more common than I realised. No wonder Walking Street bars have so many Thais guys on the doors. Another Brit inmate does his cause no good by claiming it's possible to buy your way out of trouble. Can't see that being well received when he comes to trial.

Last couple of times I've been down Walking Street I haven't seen Howard. Has he been reassigned or was he just changing his clothes in a telephone kiosk. Anybody know?

Halloween

Is it just me or is Halloween overrated. I know many bars and clubs go to a great deal of effort for the night but for me, if I wanted to drink with a witch, I'd just stay home.

The whole idea of turning beautiful girls into horrors is just a waste of time and money in my book. Anybody else feel the same?.

Now if the bars and clubs did a 'Back To Uni' night they would have my full support.

Pattaya Low Season

Dave The Rave commented on his blog earlier this week that Walking Street bars were busy for the time of year.

I had a wander round a few go-gos last night and it was standing room only in many. What's going on I wonder? I mean this is normally the slowest time of year monger wise, a time when Baby Boomers become 'sexy men' all over again!! Whatever it is it's a welcome cash boost for the bars and the girls.

Unfortunately it seems to be just Walking Street that's enjoying a mini boom becuse Sois 6, 7 & 8 were pretty quiet. Plenty of staff but few customers. For them, December can't come soon enough.

BTIT Part 6

Part 6 contains:
  • a decent promo for the additional services provided by lady boys. What's that got to do with a 'cops' show I wonder?
  • a candid interview with a Brit in prison who might find he has more than 18 months to serve when the authorities view his interview. Now where did that Bt150,000/- go?
  • references to 17 year old girls in the sex industry. Great plug, not.
  • the answer to the question that foxes us all, "why do single British men come to Thailand"?
The underlying message that Thailand is a dangerous place to visit is still in there. Comments like "dangerous holiday destination" and "Thailand is Asia crime central" will not sit well with many.

At least that's it. Part 6 was the last in the series so I'll probably never hear the word "altercation" spoken again. Small mercies.

Phoenix Golf Club

What is it with Phoenix Golf Club? It's trying to compete with high end courses like Laem Chabang yet resorts to low end pricing tactics like the Grand Palace.

At the entrance to the course there is a large banner announcing Bt700 Green Fees as a special promotion. Not bad you would think Well not bad until you find out that carts cost Bt700 each and they only allow one player per cart. When you add in the caddie fee a round with a cart costs Bt1,650/-

What I find equally surprising is you have to sign a hire form for the cart which no doubt makes the golfer liable for all damage to the cart. What's surprising about this is that with one player per cart the caddie drives. Shouldn't she sign the form?

The course was pretty quiet today but I can't say if that was because of the sharp pricing policy or the weather. All I do know is I will take a rain check if anybody suggests playing Phoenix again. For Bt1,650 I'll take Laem Chabang every time.

BTIT Part 5

Thailand's sex industry gets plenty of coverage in BTIT Part 5.

A Farang couple are caught filming inside a go-go bar with a spy camera and their equipment is confiscated. They call on Howard Altercation to help them retrieve their kit. Thing is, in the reporting this altercation, Bravo manage to show some explicit shots of girls in bars. It's probably the best promo I've seen for Pattaya in years but given the story is about not showing footage from inside bars, Bravo does a very good job of getting it out there. Bravo.

There's more coverage of the Full Moon party and convicts doing life and even a segment on Pattaya's SWAT team. Yes, there is one. The farang training the SWAT team looks the real deal and it's nice to know what he looks like so I don't accidentally step on his toe anytime soon. If you are traveling down Pattaya Central road from Sukhumvit, look up the last soi on the left before the Carrefeur traffic lights and you will see the SWAT base.

In the intro to BTIT it claims that 500 tourist police have been drafted in from around the World. Surely, the reality is they are farangs that were recruited locally. Why the need to make it more than it is?

Have to say that of al the Tourist Police shown in BTIT, Linda and Louise come out with the most credit. If I get in to trouble, sorry an altercation, I want their TLC.

Britain survives bungee fall

Cambridge graduate hit water at 80mph when cord came loose on jump in Phuket.

Fifty metres (165ft) above a Thai lagoon, ankles bound and secured to a bungee cord, Rishi Baveja shuffled to the edge of a small platform and threw himself off.

Horrifyingly, instead of the cord "bungeeing" the 22-year-old back up after unfurling, the harness securing his feet unravelled with disconcerting ease. An unsecured Baveja hit the water at 80mph (130kmh), sustaining injuries likened to those of a car crash victim.

Doctors told Baveja he was lucky to be alive after he took the force of the impact on his chest, suffering a ruptured spleen, torn liver, collapsed lungs and massive bruising. He spent a month in a Bangkok hospital following the jump on 30 July this year.

Manchester City footballer gifts his girlfriend a £264K pimped-up Bentley

pimped up bentley

This is something we can expect from a £70,000 a week footballer. Stephen Ireland, the 23-year old Irish midfielder, has splashed out a cool £264,000 (US $422,220) on a pimped up Bentley for his Wag girlfriend Jessica Lawlor. The occasion was Jessica’s 24th birthday and the premiership star wanted to make it really special and unforgettable for her. The coupe is decorated in the red and white colors of his rival Manchester United, and it comes complete with embroidered love hearts. A minimum of £1,000 was spent to change the Bentley’s B winged insignia to Jessica’s initials, JL. Stephen Ireland further spent £2,000 on customized red leather seats with a romantic message ‘To Jess Love From Stephen‘ that is surrounded by a heart shape. An extra £5,000 went into the tailored bright red alloy wheels rims has Jessica’s initials.

One City insider said...

Stephen has become just as famous for his flamboyant cars as his football and Jess one day jokingly suggested she should get one too so they could have his and hers Pimp My Ride-style cars.

The luxurious pimped up Bentley of the lovebirds features a 6-litre, 552bhp engine with a top speed of 198mph and can go from 0 to 60 in just 4.8 seconds.

Working class people are struggling to survive the 'crunch' and this numpty blows a quarter of a mill on a car for his wag. Around Bt11 mill.

Wonder what the resale value of the car is. Does the 'C' class celebrity connection add value or does it have zero value cause of the pimped out seats and insignia. More money than sense maybe!!

Hot off the blogs....

The Pattaya Ghost over at TFS2M has reported on the following steal of a deal.

Here’s a deal Pattaya hasn’t seen in about five years. From Oct. 9-19 the Diamond go-go will be toasting its 10 years in existence from from 9-10 p.m. with 10 baht drinks. I’m sure they’ll be half measures and the place will be bonkers with Cheap Charlies, but for 10 baht a drink, it will be worth fighting the crowds.

One not to miss if you can get in the door.

LG GD510 Phone

Another new handset from LG. This time its the hot GD510 - a budget touch screen phone that looks like it will be a huge hit this winter. We especially like the solar power panel which in theory should mean you never run out of battery power - if you live in the sun that is. Read more at Tech Digesst

Olympic Rings - Why Brazil won

Chicago's bid to host the Olympics failed due to a rather restrained choice of 'Rings' for the event.

Pattaya Bay Redevelopment - Proposal

This major proposal, reported by the Pattaya Daily News, includes Beach Road being upgraded to a dual carriageway. A corniche of sorts. It's yet another step away from the natural, tropical look of Pattaya Bay to a more Monaco like appearance. I like the troppo look myself.

Chris Charles - Sport review of the week

A couple of snippets from CC's weekly blog.:

Meanwhile, Ryan Giggs continued to plug the gaping hole left by Ronaldo's departure. The oldest winger in town scored his 150th goal for United in the 2-1 defeat of Wolfsburg, with Michael Carrick (remember him?) bagging the winner. The Mirror summed it all up with the headline 'Carrick Keeps The Wolf From The Draw'. Genius.

Things weren't quite so rosy for Liverpool, who crashed 2-0 to Fiorentina under the watchful gaze of Sting. Teenager Stefan Jovetic did the damage for the Italians by scoring both goals in a sublime all-round performance. In fact, every l ittle thing he did was magic.

While I was in Newcastle there I sampled the local cuisine - stotties, black pudding and cod from the Tyne (all mine, all mine) and learned that Alan Shearer had been appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Northumberland (bit of a step down from The Messiah).

Non-football story of the week was sent in by Ian Pashley and involves a racehorse called Transvestite. Apparently the commentator in Coral's bookmakers observed: "Coming to the final fence and Transvestite is looking for a change of gear."

Paint Job

A beautiful blonde teenager, wanting to earn some extra money for the summer, decided to hire herself out as a 'handy-woman' and  started canvassing a  nearby well-to-do neighbourhood. She went to  the front door of the  first house, and asked the owner if he had any odd jobs for her to do.
'Well, I guess I could use somebody to paint my porch,' he said, 'How much will you charge me?'
Delighted, the girl quickly responded, 'How about $50?'
The man agreed and told her that the paint brushes and everything she would need was in the garage. The man's wife, hearing the conversation, said to her husband, 'Does she realise that our porch goes ALL the way around the house?   That's a bit cynical, isn't it?'
The man replied, 'You're right. I guess I'm starting to believe all those dumb blonde jokes we've been getting by e-mail lately.'
Later that day, the blonde came to the door to collect her money.
'You're finished already?' the startled husband asked.
'Yes', the blonde replied, 'and I even had paint left over, so I gave it two coats.'
Impressed, the man reached into his pocket for the $50.00 and handed it to her along with a ten-dollar tip.
'And by the way,' the blonde added, 'it's not a Porch, it's a Lexus.

World Broadband Speeds

New research by Cisco Systems and the Säid Business School shows who the world leaders are when it comes to broadband speeds.

The leaders, unsurprisingly are South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong and Sweden with the UK lagging 25th out of the 66 countries listed.  The USA comes 24th.  This will come as no surprise to anyone living in the UK where our poor broadband speeds have been an issue of contention for some years.

The most interesting figures emerge when you examine the findings in full which shows both the USA and UK borderline on meeting the bare minimum “needs of today’s applications” and you can see from the chart how far behind Japan just about every other country is.

Thailand is well to the bottom of the table which probably comes as no surprise but it wouldn't have to improve by much to leapfrog a good number of countries above it in the table.

Bag Jobs

There's one thing living here that really bugs me. Not to the extent that farangs walking round shopping malls with no shirt on bugs me but still an issue that bugs me enough to blog about it.

Now I'm no expert on this but aren't relationships between bar girls and farangs based on 'provides'. She provides the looks and he provides for her needs - money, food, clothes, accommodation, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, mother(s), father(s), buffaloes, etc, etc. The guy is not required to provide 'looks' or even a personality but a little of either would help grease the wheels.

So if this is the recognised format for success why is it I am seeing more and more guys, some young, with bag jobs. It defies logic, common sense, Newton's Laws and any other laws I can't think of right now. What possesses the men in these relationships? Is it a meeting of the minds? Maybe the lady has money. I have to say it's an issue that's really u nbalancing my world.

If your friends are making derogatory comments about your 'tilac' - maybe talking about her and buffaloes in the same sentence, then could you please e-mail me to let me know what the attraction is. I really do need to know.

I also know this post could be considered shallow, cause it is, and I know many think beauty is only skin deep. Even so, don't respond to my efforts with an abusive e-mail. Instead, just get on the next plane back to your home country and go-go dancing with a 'blue rinse' or two.  Bon voyage, mo-fo. Leave the lookers to those of us who know the 'score'.

Note: This is about bar girl/farang relationships and has absolutely nothing to do with farangs dating 'good' Thai girls. That's a whole different ball game........ There, farangs often have to provide looks and personality too.......

Movies opening in Thailand today

  • Broken Embraces - Pedro Almodovar's fourth film with Penélope Cruz isn't his finest work, but he brings his signature visual brilliance to this noirish tale, and the cast turns in some first-class performances. Almodóvar delves into noir style to tell a tale of a man (Lluis Homar) with dual identities who tries to compartmentalize his life after he loses his love (Cruz) and his sight in a car crash.
  • The Time Traveler's WifeBased on the best-selling book about a love that transcends time. Clare has been in love with Henry her entire life. She believes they are destined to be together, even though she never knows when they will be separated: Henry is a time traveler -- cursed with a rare genetic anomaly that causes him to live his life on a shifting timeline, skipping back and forth through his lifespan with no control. Despite the fact that Henry’s travels force them apart with no warning, Clare desperately tries to build a life with her one true love
  • G-Force (animation) - Producer Jerry Bruckheimer brings his first 3-D film to the big screen with G-Force, a comedy adventure about the latest evolution of a covert government program to train animals to work in espionage. Armed with the latest high-tech spy equipment, these highly trained guinea pigs discover that the fate of the world is in their paws. Ed. It's taken $117 million at the box office so it shows kids movies sell.
  • A Thai gay horror - Ed. Horror also sells to Thai teens. Not sure how 'gay' is being used here. A 'jolly' horror would be a first I suspect but unlikely. Can only mean one thing.....

Transferring Non-Immigrant Visa to new passport

Went to Immigration (Jomtien Soi 5) this morning to transfer my visa from my old passport to my new passport. I had already picked up the requisite form and attached photocopies of all the relevant pages of my old passport plus a photocopy of the bio page of my new passport. Job done I thought. Not quite.

I found out I needed a letter from Barry Kenyon, the local British Consul, which I didn't have. Fortunately Barry was at the Immigration Office at the time so he knocked out the letter there and then. Job done.

If you ever need to transfer your visa to a new passport just be aware of this last requirement. Barry's in Immigration most mornings but I'm not sure he's there all day so plan accordingly.

Got to give Barry and the Immigration staff at Soi 5 a big plus for their courtesy and efficiency. If you ever went to the old Immigration Office off Sathorn Road in Bangkok you'll know just how lucky we are to have Soi 5.
