Did PTTGC cover-up size of Samet spill?

The national papers have turned their spotlight on PTTGC and are questioning how a global company can be so ill equipped to handle a crisis of this nature. More pointedly, questions are being asked about the exact size of the spill. PTTGC claimed 50,000 litres of crude oil had leaked from an offshore pipeline but suspicions are the amount could be much higher.

Thailand, holiday in hell or paradise?

From a drunken student wounding 3 tourists with random gun shots, to a Russian being slapped around the face with a fake revolver, to the Evil Man of Krabi, to train derailments and coach crashes. Is Thailand becoming a riskier destination for foreign visitors?

This recent rash of negative reports has prompted Deputy Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul to issue a statement assuring the world that tourist safety was one of the government's top priorities.

Rag - It should be a priority given the importance of the tourist dollar to the Thai economy. Between bad publicity and developers eating away at Thailand's coastline, Thailand needs to be careful it doesn't become a transit point to neighboring countries.

Crystal & Iron earn top billing in Pattaya

The stand out bars from the ones visited last night were easily Crystal, LK Metro and Iron on Walking Street.

Photo from Bachelor - it's dark in there so the LEDs stand out.

Crystal was the busiest bar by far and has probably the best line up of girls of any bar on on LK. Some bars on LK hardly had any customers which I guess is a sign of the low season times.

On Walking Street, Iron created a huge impression with it's bevy of beautiful and buxom, (many natural), ladies. I could have easily stayed there all night drinking in the view..... Sensations still has a stunning line up but was surprisingly low on customers last night. If they can't pull the punters in with their line up then this must be the lowest of all low seasons. i-Bar was bouncing if that's your thing with more pretty things in there than you can shake a stick at. You'll probably have more success in there if you haven't yet qualified for a bus pass.... what say you One Shirt.....

Scams Must Go Says Pattaya Mayor

Thailand’s best known tourist playground needs to strengthen confidence in its services, crackdown on scams and develop an efficient transport system, Pattaya Mayor, Itthiphol Kunplome, told the media.

“Ministry of Tourism and Sports is closely monitoring the issues…to increase safety the city will launch its own Pattaya Public Safety Centre next month where tourists can register complaints and get assistance,” the mayor said.

Pattaya will also be one of the first destinations to have “tourism court” that will deal quickly with non-violent crimes against tourists.

This year, Pattaya expects to welcome around 8 million tourists — foreigners (70%) and Thais (30%)—with revenue of around Bt80,000 million in tourism-related revenue.

More Brits Dying In Thailand

British officials have faced a startling rise in the number of deaths and hospitalisations of British citizens in Thailand, newly-released figures show.

Deaths jumped from 296 in 2011-2012 to 389 in the year ending April 1 this year. Hospitalisations rose from 217 to 285 in the same period, the official statistics show.

''Road traffic accidents, many involving young people on mopeds, and an ageing expat population are both factors attributed to the increase in cases.''

Phuket's Tuk Tuks being phased out but no progress in sight

All 1100 tuk-tuks on Phuket are being converted to the 11 seater Suzuki tuk-tuk model, (see photograph), which is said by its driver to be the first of its kind on Phuket.

There are at least 10 of the larger, cheaper Suzuki tuk-tuks operating now on Phuket with the Daihatsu tuk-tuks all eventually destined for the scrapyard.

Read the full article at Phuket Wan.

Rag - no great improvement in my book. What Pattaya is screaming out for is a replacement for the old style Baht Bus taxis and the same could apply to Phuket. The Suzuki is same old, same old. How tourists figure out how to use the Baht Bus style of taxi I'll never know.

To me the obvious answer is the electrical samlor/Tuk Tuk. Environmentally friendly, can maneuver in Pattaya's small sois, can pick up passengers without stopping the flow of traffic and can operate point to point, door to door, making things easy for tourists. It's also uniquely Thai, (well Asian), and would have plenty of tourist appeal. A number of Baht Buses could be retained to operate from 3rd Road and beyond.

The major stumbling block for change in Pattaya is the ever powerful Baht Bus Taxi mafia. Rumour has it that the mayor who breaks their monopoly will live an interesting but short life...... Baht Bus it is then.....

Visit of 4 top Euro teams will cost 1 Billion Baht

Visits by four of Europe's biggest teams will cost close to Bt1 billion, but Thailand gets little lasting benefit

This issue came into sharp focus again after Singha Corporation revealed they paid around Bt400 million for the visit by Manchester United and Chelsea, with whom they have lucrative sponsorship contracts as global partners. It meant the total cost for bringing the four clubs to Thailand could be just short of Bt1 billion.

But that sort of money could yield a massive improvement to Thai football if spent on facilities or local development.

Would it not be wiser to spend such vast sums on something more tangible than just brief appearances by star players?

Mcot Plc, the broadcaster of Modernine TV, earlier announced plans to either purchase the rights from CTH for 480 million baht to broadcast 17 EPL football matches a year for three years; or pay 210 million baht to the cable TV provider for the broadcasting rights for three years with Mcot having to share 40% of the total revenue with CTH.

"This method will enable us to choose the best matches of the week to broadcast on TV Channel 9," Mr Sutham said.

Thailand in danger of being a nation run by thieves

Corruption at all levels of Thai society continues to be a serious problem for Thailand. Public officials, from junior civil servants and policemen to top bureaucrats and Cabinet members, are regularly accused of graft, and many of them have been convicted for corruption and sentenced to terms of imprisonment or other punishment.

On the global scale, Thailand ranks dreadfully in terms of transparency, often among countries at a similar stage of economic advancement. Recent surveys by eight leading organisations promoting government transparency have found that the Kingdom's performance has worsened in recent years. This is because there have been large-scale irregularities in government policies, often facilitated by legal loopholes, according to NACC member Klanarong Chanthick. "Corruption is badly undermining the country's economic, political and social systems. Irregularities in Thailand tend to get more serious and complex," he said.

To read the full article go to The Nation.

Rag - I suspect many would say the horse has already bolted on this one........ It doesn't make it right but my feeling is Thailand is no worse than Britain or America when it comes to corruption amongst bureaucrats and politicians.  For those that don't know the classic movie 'Mr Smith Goes To Washington' was about corruption and graft in Washington and was released in 1939. You would be as naive as Mr Smith if you thought things had changed for the better in the last 74 years.
