US businessman feared kidnapped in Pattaya

The U.S. State Department has confirmed they are involved in the search for a local businessman, 38-year-old Nick Springer, in Pattaya.

Friends of American Springer have been searching nonstop, since the developer disappeared after working at a construction site sometime Wednesday night. “I think he’s been drugged and abducted,” said Harvey Sims, Springer’s business partner in Thailand.

Sims said a Thai security guard saw Springer either sick or impaired, being guided by a woman into a car near his home. His ex-girlfriend had been threatening him for a long time,” Sims said. “She was the last person to answer his phone. We think she knows what happened, but we can’t find her now, either,” Sims said.

Why Importing an LG Nexus 4 to Thailand was a fail

Sometimes you can be too smart for your own good!!!

I decided a month or two back that my next phone would be an LG Nexus 4 but was then surprised to find the Nexus cost Bt18,000 locally when it was just Bt12,000 in UK, (inc. VAT).

A friend happened to be travelling out to Thailand from UK around that time so I decided to save myself Bt6k and get him to buy the Nexus 4 in the UK and mule it out to me. Job done. Well yes and no.

When I'm using my sexy new Nexus 4 when travelling around Pattaya, calls drop out when I assume I'm crossing cells. Not just that, it seems parking in the shade of a palm tree can give it a 'nose bleed'. I should add that the Nexus 4 is included in my earlier Facebook post on the Top 8 Smartphones of 2013.

I happened to be in the HTC shop in Tukcom and mentioned to the owner there that my heapo cheapo HTC phone held calls better than my new super sexy Nexus 4, imported from UK. He started laughing which was something I wasn't expecting. He explained that phones made for sale in the west have cheaper comms chip sets in them as the cell coverage there is so good. He said phones sold in Asia need a more expensive comms chip sets built in to them to compensate for the broken cell coverage. Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh and I wasn't laughing.

I've now had more than Bt6k worth of 'P' taken out of me by pals and the best comment so far was from One Shirt who said, "Most people buy a Nexus 4 mobile but I'd bought a Nexus 4 Static......." $%^&$#

There is one major upside. I nearly always lose the signal when I'm talking to One Shirt so that's a result. Not only that, I can now just close a call with him when I've had enough and tell him the signal dropped when I drove passed a lamp post.......

If you are thinking of importing a phone..... think again.

Thailand: 90% of the land owned by the richest 10%

According to the Land Institute Foundation, about 6 million people or 10% of the population own 90% of the country’s land. Yet 70% of these plots are speculative land left idle or under-used by absentee landlords. The economic damage from idle land is estimated at 127 billion baht a year.

Isn’t it scandalous when such land excess among the privileged few is allowed while 40% of the farmers do not even have their own land or do not have enough to become self-reliant?

Isn’t it scandalous when 4.8 million farmers lack land to till while 30 million rai of farmland cannot be used because it is locked in bankruptcy lawsuits?

Land reform advocate Permsak Makarapirom claims the country’s current political turmoil is rooted in structural injustice which has fueled popular discontent nationwide. At its core is the scandalous land ownership system. “We must undo it while we still have time. Otherwise, we’re doomed.”

9 Ways the One Percent Are Screwing You Over

This article was written with the U.S.A. in mind but all points apply equally well to U.K.

01-Burning-Money

9. Hoarding Trillions Offshore

8. Avoiding Tax

7. Acting above the Law

6. Killing Democracy

5. Supporting Slavery

4. Destroying Wealth

3. Destroying the Environment

2. Making You Pay for Their Mistakes

1. Destroying America

Rag - Listverse justifies Point 6 Killing Democracy by saying the rich and powerful try to influence your vote. Maybe they do but that's not the real issue. The real issue is the rich and powerful don't care who you vote in, they'll just corrupt whomever you elect. So yes, it's representative government in as far as you voted them in to office but it's not a government that works for the best interests of the country and it's people, it's a government that works for the best interests of the One Percent.

For a full explanation of each bullet point above go to Listverse.

Boat crash off Pattaya injures 18

Eighteen South Korean tourists were injured, two critically, when two speedboats ferrying them to Pattaya's Koh Larn collided Sunday morning.

The two most seriously injured were identified as 51-year-old Myung Be Kim, whose legs were nearly severed, and 63-year-old Gihwa Song, whose leg was torn off.

The two drivers of the speedboats left the scene and are still at large.

Can't pull in England? Buy a Thai girl, he told me

‘You should go to Thailand,’ he said finally. ‘The birds are different over there.’

‘You should go to Thailand,’ he said finally. ‘The birds are different over there.’ ‘Different?’ I said. ‘How’s that?’ ‘Ever been?’ he said. I shook my head. ‘Oh, mate,’ he said, anguished.
Then he fell silent again, momentarily lost in a private fantasy. His Thailand experiences were obviously so rich and varied he hardly knew where to begin. Nor could he quite put his finger on that particular aspect of Thai women that made them so very different from our English ones. ‘They’re just different, that’s all,’ he explained. ‘They don’t muck about.’ And they don’t cost much? I said, happy to show I was not entirely ignorant about the subject. ‘Yeah, yeah, you buy them,’ he said. ‘Where don’t you? But I don’t mean that.’

Will Thais Tittoo too?

Nipple tattooing, or ‘tittooing’ as it is nicknamed, is a process which originated as a medical procedure for breast reconstruction. Now, it serves as a cosmetic procedure for women to darken, enlarge and define their nipples and the surrounding areola. The semi-permanent treatment gives women 'perfect nipples' and can last a life-time with regular top-ups. (Rag - so it doesn't last a lifetime then.)

The two-hour procedure, which can cost up to £1,200 for both nipples, lasts around 12 to 18 months and top-ups are recommended to restore any colour lost as the ink fades over time.

Read the full article at The Telegraph.

Rag - Has the world gone totally mad? I sort of understood brow definition but vajazzling and tittooing are wasted on me. After all, how many guys do you know who stop to admire 'nipple definition'? It won't be long before men are asked to suck more gently so as not to remove the 'colour'. In that situation I think I'd be semi-permanent too.  FFS.

And before anybody else thinks of it, I'm already marketing package holidays in UK for girls to get two weeks holiday in Thailand with a couple of hours thrown in at a back street tattooist for a bit of tittooing for the bargain price of £1,500/-  Price includes free inspections.

Thai Police call for longer bar opening hours in Bangkok

A police proposal to extend Bangkok nightlife closing times by two hours to 4.00am is getting a mixed reaction.

The Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB) has proposed the extension as part of preparations for the Asean Economic Community (AEC) launch in 2015.

The proposal seeks to amend the law controlling entertainment venues so bar and nightclub closing times can be extended.

Rag - As long as Bangkok has 2.00am closing then there is a risk the same closing time could be forced on Pattaya. If Bangkok moves to 4.00am closing then Pattaya should be free to do 'it's thing'.

Can Burma Avoid the Curse of Sex Tourism?

Burma Sex Tourism

Rangoon’s so-called “model shows” are hardly salacious affairs compared with the raunchy sex shows that have made Bangkok one of the world’s sex-tourism capitals. But Burmese officials and human-rights groups are worried about what could come next as tourists pour into Burma after decades of isolation.

Burmese fears are well founded. Human-trafficking networks have long operated in the country, funneling thousands of women and girls into Thailand to fuel the sex industry there, to say nothing of the many women (particularly from the impoverished border state of Shan) who voluntarily go. Many are underage and willing to sell their virginity for high prices,

Thai Songkran Water Festival more important than water shortage

45 drought provinces declared disaster areas but Songkran is a time to travel back home & reunite with families, so the show must go on.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) reportedly expects the five-day festival to generate more than 11 billion baht for the tourism industry. It is expected that 100 million baht will be generated on Khao San Road alone during the festival.

The MWA estimates that water splashing during the Songkran festival in the capital and its vicinities will add another 100,000 cubic metres to daily demand. For the sake of comparison, that amount of water would need 8,333 12-tonne trucks for storage. If those 8,333 trucks were lined up, the total length would be 100km - the distance from Bangkok to Sara Buri province.

Update on Pattaya Beach Road 'Under Construction' Again

The promenade is being ripped up to make way for a 4th lane running the full length of Beach Road.

Photos via Andy P.

Comments:

Dan Rigby They should just make a baht bus lane(s), that would solve some problems as they hold up everything!

Thomas Moon Mullins Making it a baht/tour bus lane makes way to much sense

Vitali Kolos I know!!! It's going to turn into a long parking line for the scooter and Jeep rentals!

Pattaya Rag As somebody mentioned earlier, it's already difficult to cross the road so imagine what it will be like when it's a lane wider. Tourists will be risking life and limb to get to the beach. I guess they could put in more pedestrian crossings for people to ignore.......

Pattaya Beach Road 'Under Construction' again

Beach Road at the north end of the beach is under construction, again......

I drove on to Beach Road from the Dolphin Roundabout and was surprised to find the Promenade from the Dusit Hotel, running south for a good number of sois, had disappeared. Not only that but most of the beach side lane of Beach Road is blocked of by bollards so traffic was congested into two lanes. Expect jams over the weekend.

As I drove south, I caught up with the team ripping up the existing Promenade and they were clearly working further south. A new walkway running the full length of Beach Road could be on the cards. Time will tell.
