Thaksin: I am ready to return as PM

Deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra said on Tuesday he was ready to return to Thailand to be prime minister if it is the people's wish for him to solve the country's problems. He also called for Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to dissolve the House of Representatives to return power to the people.

Now regardless of the rights and wrongs of the whole messy issue the last thing the Thai tourist industry needs right now is more political strife. With reports that HRH is not in the best of health means that things could go from bad to worse very quickly.

The 3* market will be okay as their customers will continue to come to Thailand regardless of the political situation. It's the 5* market that diverts to calmer waters. The high end tourists who's money benefits all aspects of the industry: hotels; spas; shops; tours; restaurants. Three star tourists more often know their way around and spend their money on budget food, budget drink and possibly budget women. Let's hope for peaceful times. Ed.
