Pattaya Fora

When I first started out with this blog I made some disparaging remarks about the various forums covering Pattaya and Bangkok. Having 20-20 hindsight vision, I would like to set the record straight.

When I first started visiting Thailand the first port of call was always Jools Bar on Soi Nana to find out from Kim and the regulars what was hot and what was not around Bangkok. This worked fine apart from the fact I was always pissed by sundown thanks to Kim and his bell ringing. The forums provide exactly the same service for visitors without the expense or damage to your few remaining brain cells. You can find out which bars are hot, which are not and unlimited information on mongering in general. For the resident expats the forums provide what their name suggests, a meeting place online, a forum for gossip, tips, abuse, items for sale, business promotion, visa requirements, restaurant reviews and on and on. The bar girl pics aren't bad either. The only downside I can see is having to plough through some totally pointless posts, by people trying to qualify for the members section, to get to the good stuff.

My most oft visited fora are:

Now which ever forum put the knuckle-draggers outside my gate, would you please remove them.....

  • A 59-year-old German national was murdered over the weekend in his home at Thailand's Pattaya beach resort, Thai police said Monday. The body of Kurt Schmolke of Lahnstein on the Rhein River in western Germany was discovered Sunday evening when police received reports of a fire at his home in Pattaya, 100 kilometres south-east of Bangkok. Schmolke had been stabbed and suffocated, police said. Found next to the body was a plastic bag containing 500 euros and 30,000 Thai baht (870 dollars), said Major Jakarin Tuasupat of Pattaya's Banglamung Police Station, who inspected the scene. Tuasupat suspected Schmolke was killed three hours before the fire by a foreigner, he told DPA [via Earthtimes.org]

  • Tried out the 'under new management' Dollhouse and they appear to have a number of new shufflers on board. If I have a criticism it's that I went in the bar about 8.15pm and the girls were lazily going through the motions but the beer was still 110Baht. If I go again, it will be later in the evening when the 'A' team's on the job. I would expect no less for 110Baht beer.

  • TV Schedule Of Major Sporting Events - link to the TV schedule for major sporting events such as the IRB Rugby World Cup, English Premier League, F1 Grand Prix, Cricket and Euro 2008 qualifiers. Note: The Twenty20 Cricket World Cup starts today in South Africa and although it's not shown in the schedule it may get some coverage on the Sophon Indian or Australian channels. The only way to find out is to tune in.

  • Recover Accidentally Deleted Files on your Computer

What should you do if you deleted a file accidentally? First off, stop any and all activity on your computer (as much as you can). Downloading files and running programs can overwrite deleted files, ruining any chance of resurrecting them. Then download a program like FreeUndelete, which helps you recover deleted files. Ideally, you want to download the utility to a separate hard disk or removable media like a USB drive. If you download it to the drive with the accidentally deleted file, you run the risk of overwriting the deleted file.

Once that's done, the program is very simple to use. Just select a hard drive that you want to scan for delete files and click the Scan button. You'll get back a list of files that have been deleted, which you can filter based on name. Simply select the ones you want to bring back and hit the Undelete button. FreeUndelete supports NTFS, FAT32, and FAT16 file systems. [via {Digital} Alchemy]
