Baht To Stabilise

Now that the Finance Ministry and the Bank of Thailand (BOT) have joined forces to build demand for the dollar, the central bank believes the Baht will eventually become stable purely as a result of market mechanisms.

While the economy is gradually picking up, the Baht will weaken when the import of goods accelerates. The revocation of capital controls will allow further bond-market development without interruption and as the economic-restructuring process makes progress in the medium term, supporting factors such as low interest, the stronger Baht and tax measures will come into play. • Microsoft StartKey - Windows Desktop on a USB Drive. Microsoft StartKey will put your entire Windows desktop on a USB Flash drive including the software programs, files and settings.  portable-windows-computer-usb.jpg

You can then plug this USB stick into any PC and use it as if it were your own personal workstation.

While this is not a new concept and existing applications like MojoPac do offer similar functionality, Microsoft Startkey will definitely help in popularising this whole idea of converting a portable storage device into a computer, especially among the non-techie crowd.

The first public beta of StartKey is expected later this year. For more on Windows Startkey, check out ZDNet. [via Digital Inspiration]

  • Create fully functioning PDF’s for free - Yesterday I spent about 4 hours trying to get a pdf right. I was making a subscription based newsletter for my website, so I obviously needed something of high quality. I couldn’t use Acrobat, since that costs an insane amount of money, and everything else I use couldn’t get it right.

Sure, you can use CutePDF, BullZip or PrimoPDF to install PDF printers, but these are only adequate (Primo was the best I think), but even if you do get the quality you need, you won’t get the links and table of contents, and when making a 20 page newsletter, these are sorely missed.oomenu.jpg

After spending hours trying to figure out something, I even tried editing the PDF code by hand I realized that the solution was right under my nose, free and easy to use. I found out that OpenOffice has PDF export, and I quickly imported my Office doc, made some alterations and exported it. The export was finished in about 10 seconds and the result was perfect.

Quality is very high and most importantly, links are left intact, and table of contents are derived from the heading structure. I didn’t need to edit, alter or erase anything afterwards, it was as if I created the PDF with Acrobat 8. If you need powerful PDF conversion, head on over to OpenOffice.org and get yourself Open Office for free. [gHacks Tech News]

  • FaaRClock 1.0: Use an analogue clock as your screensaver - FaaRClock 1.0 is a program for Windows that displays a simple and very readable analogue clock as your computer's screensaver. The download and install is simple. Upon existing the installation, you'll be prompted to make FaaRClock your default screensaver.faarclock.jpg

Additional settings are available in the screensaver tab found in your Windows Display Properties. Those settings allow you to:

  • Choose a background colour
  • Set an input method to wake up the computer (mouse click, mouse movement, customized hot key, etc...)

FaaRClock is a nice idea for our increasingly virtual homes, where the only clocks in the house are on our computers and cell phones. With FaaRClock up and running, you can see the time without having to lug yourself across the room. The only requirement is Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and Flash Player 8 or higher. FaaRClock 1.0 is free.  [via Download Squad]

  • Monica Lewinsky was looking at herself nude in a mirror, after a relaxing bath. Her frustration over her lack of ability to lose weight was depressing her. In an act of desperation, she decided to call on God for help... "God...if you take away my love handles, I'll devote my life to you," she prayed. And at that very moment, her ears fell off...........
