Long term residents will tell you they've seen it all before. A crackdown, followed by money changing hands, followed by business as usual. That being the case, why should this crackdown be any different to all the ones that have gone before. Well, for one thing, serious money is now being invested in Pattaya in the shape of new hotels, condos and malls by powerful Thais and these Thais won't see their investments affected by Pattaya's night time entertainment industry.
These Thais will push for change and this crackdown may just be the beginning. Their vision will be of a Pattaya resembling St Tropez or Cannes, not Aya Nappa or Benidorm on steroids. Sure they will want to retain a zone of night time fun to give Pattaya an edge but there is no way it will continue in it's present form, all over town.
It would seem logical that farang backed establishments will be targeted first. They'll target farang visas and operating licenses. Oh, hang on, haven't they already started doing that.....

- More Efficient, Less Annoying Mac Widget Management [Mac Tip] - If you're even a semi-regular Dashboard user, you've probably been irritated by the three-step process involved in removing a widget from Dashboard: You click the plus ( ) sign in the corner, which brings up an "X" on all the widgets, you click the "X" to close the widget, and then you click the plus sign again to return things to normal. Annoying, yes? Weblog TUAW points out a simple trick to prevent this Dashboard annoyance: Just hold down your Option key when you hover over the widget you want to close. - Get Administrator Access with Sudo for Windows - Sudo for Windows is an alternative for those with programs they often have to "Run as Administrator" in Windows XP or Vista, but offers a more convenient and accessible way of getting there. Rather than having to know an administrative password, "SudoWin" lets you use your own Windows password to elevate your privileges, and doesn't tie your account to the administrator's data folders when you log in. A handy tool to have around when you need it, and it runs from a right-click context item. Sudo for Windows is a free download for Windows systems only. [via Lifehacker]

- The United Way realized that it had never received a donation from the city's most successful lawyer. So a United Way volunteer paid the lawyer a visit in his lavish office.
The volunteer opened the meeting by saying, 'Our research shows that even though your annual income is over two million dollars, you don't give a penny to charity. Wouldn't you like to give something back to your community through the United Way?'
The lawyer thinks for a minute and says, 'First, did your research also show you that my mother is dying after a long, painful illness and she has huge medical bills that are far beyond her ability to pay?'
Embarrassed, the United Way rep mumbles, 'Uh..... no, I didn't know that.'
'Secondly,' says the lawyer, 'my brother, a disabled veteran, is blind and confined to a wheelchair and is unable to support his wife and six children.'
The stricken United Way rep begins to stammer an apology, but is cut off again. 'Thirdly, did your research also show you that my sister's husband died in a dreadful car accident, leaving her penniless with a mortgage and three children, one of whom is disabled and another that has learning disabilities requiring an array of private tutors?'
The humiliated United Way rep, completely beaten, says, 'I'm so sorry, I had no idea.'
And the lawyer says, 'So..... if I didn't give any money to them, what makes you think I'd give any to you?'
