Cancer Is The Top Killer In Thailand

Cancer is the top killer in Thailand, claiming as many as 66,000 lives in 2006 alone. The number of cancer patients has also been growing, according to the National Health Security Office (NHSO).

"Last year, we paid Bt1.4 billion to hospitals for treatment given to cancer patients under the universal healthcare scheme," NHSO deputy secretary general Dr Veeravat Prankrut said Monday. [via The Nation]

  • Investor confidence in Thailand's property market is once again on the rise as the sector is experiencing a new and invigorating start to the year. [via Bangkok Post] Ed. Another article by Nigel Cornick of Raimon Land talking up the Pattaya property market. It appears in the Post under the heading Property Insight but surely with Cornick's vested interests this is somewhat misleading. Wouldn't a more appropriate heading be Property Promotion or Advertisement? One's thing's for sure, Cornick will never publish a negative view of Pattaya's property scene. Raimon Land has too much to lose.

  • Task Manager Replacement  - The Windows Task Manager is great for a first quick glance at the running processes and applications but it lacks functionality that is needed as well. If you wanted to check why an application or process is running you would have to check the startup settings which are not accessible in the task manager. This would mean to either look in the Windows Registry and open a system tool like msconfig or open a third party application like Autoruns from Sysinternals.

Another possible option is to replace the Windows Task Manager with a more powerful application that would load when pressing the CTRL ALT DEL keyboard shortcut. Anvir Task Manager Free is such a possibility. It adds much needed functionality to the Task Manager which reveals additional information.

The interface looks a bit overloaded at first glance but it’s rather easy to get used to it. The software has five main tabs: Startup, Processes, Applications, Services and Log.

If you take a closer look at the Processes tab you notice several additions. You might remember that the Windows Task Manager displays the process name and the memory used by the process.

The Anvir Task Manager displays if the process was automatically started and by which service or application, the executable file, the window name (if any) and much more. That’s only the information that you receive at first glance. If you mark a process you receive additional information such as a security risk analysis, information from a startup / services database, process properties, product information and files related to that process.

As you can see the Task Manager offers a wealth of information that makes live much easier. I could go on and explain other settings but that would lead to far in my opinion. Some other useful features are a menu that displays all connections of the system with the option to kill the process responsible, writing the traffic details to a log or to close the connection.

The right-click menu offers additional information and functions. You can perform web searches, send files to Virus Total to check them for viruses and much more. [via gHacks]

  • XLink combines your landline and cell phones via Bluetooth

I’m fortunate enough not to work in a large office. Generally speaking, large offices usually mean boring cubicles and annoying phone systems. The only phone lines that I worry about are my cell phone and my fax line. However, if you have an office phone, here’s a device that might make things a little easier for you.

The Xlink Cellular Gateway will let you “use your cellular phone as your home phone” and “use your home phone as your cell phone.” Essentially what it does is take your existing office phone (or home phone, doesn’t really matter what you call it) and integrate it with up to three Bluetooth mobile phones. This allows you to answer landline calls from your cell phone, and cell phone calls on your landline (when the phones are in range).

If I had a larger house or office I might consider something like this. I don’t know how many times I’ve had to run upstairs to grab my cell phone when it would be just as easy to grab one of the cordless phones downstairs. You can pick one up for $169.99. [via Coolest Gadgets]

  • Every time they made love the husband always insisted on turning off the light. Well, after 20 years the wife felt this was ridiculous. She figured she would break him out of this crazy habit. So one night, while they were in the middle of a wild, screaming, romantic session, she turned on the lights. She looked down and saw her husband was holding a battery-operated leisure device... a vibrator!!!! Soft, wonderful and larger than a real one. She went completely ballistic. 'You impotent bastard,' She screamed at him, 'how could you be lying to me all of these years? You better explain yourself!' The husband looks her straight in the eyes and says calmly: 'I'll explain the toy . . . you explain the kids.'
