Chinese, Russians Boost Pattaya Property Sales

The real estate market in Pattaya is attracting more interest from Chinese and Russian buyers who are pouring about 160 million Baht into property, said Bruno Pingel, chief executive of Siam Best Enterprise Co Ltd. Siam Best is developing the country's tallest residential building, Ocean 1 Tower on Jomtien Beach. "During the past six weeks, Chinese and Russian buyers have been responsible for kick-starting the local real estate market to the value of 162 million Baht. It is difficult to define their sudden interest but I have no doubt they are influenced partly by the fact that a democratic election is expected for Dec 23," he said.

Siam Best reported that 23% of Ocean 1 Tower has been sold already. Prices range between 125,000 and 130,000 Baht per square metre, and would increase by 10,000 Baht per sq metre when it receives permission to construct the project. Most buyers are from Europe, the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States, but it expects more inquiries from Thai buyers after final approval is received from City Hall. • A reader once asked how to find about all those crazy parties that go on at the big Bangkok night clubs. Most of the time I see postings about them after they have already happened. But sometimes I see a promo poster in advance, like this one. It's a Hang Gang part on October 19 at Bar Yan Tree at Ratchada. I don't know if it will be like the Hang Show Girls event where the Hang girls strut there stuff on stage, or really wild like Hang sticker party where customers paste stickers all over the girls' barely clad bodies. • Ladyboys Brawl In Front Of Wat Chai In South Pattaya - An older katoey hired four teenagers to beat up a younger ladyboy due to a previous dispute. The younger ladyboy who was beaten up asked her friend to help her find the older ladyboy and beat her up as revenge. The two younger katoeys found the older katoey in front of Wat Chai and attacked her with a long club and a fluorescent tube. The older katoey was alone but had a box cutter in hand for protection. Although there were many bystanders, the katoeys were fighting ferociously. The two younger ones were pulling the older one’s hair and hitting her on the face. Police officers stopped the brawl and confiscated the weapons. [via Pattaya Daily News]

  • Ford Motor Co (F.N) and Mazda Motor Corp (7261.T) said they will build a second, $500 million plant in Thailand to produce 100,000 cars a year to meet the region's growing demand for small cars. The factory, to be constructed at the site of their existing pickup truck plant in the eastern province of Rayong, would produce the Mazda2/Demio subcompact car and an unnamed small Ford car based on the Mazda2's platform, starting in 2009, the companies said on Tuesday.

  • Six 45-foot Chinese dragon boats will be raced at Royal Phuket Marina on December 9, the last day of the Phuket International Marine Expo (PIMEX), in the inaugural Phuket International Dragon Boat Challenge. Mike Downard, CEO of event-organizer Sail in Asia, explained, “It’s basically a day out for the family on the final day of the boat show. The races will be staged in the basin and the crowds of spectators will be able to watch the participants as they power the boats through the water on the race course.” There will be 18 people in each boat with a drummer beating out the stroke rhythm and a helm organizing the crew, Mr Downard said. “The training takes 10 minutes ashore and 10 minutes on the water. We then race the teams – schools, charities, property companies, fancy dress and of course the serious teams, too. [via Phuket Gazette]

  • Clicking on Start, All Programs, then the folder of the software that you want to start and finally the software is the normal way to start applications using the Windows start menu. Unfortunately though it closes every time you have started a software from it which means that you have to follow the same path again if you want to open another application from it. I used this way to start several applications after system start until I discovered that it is possible to start multiple applications from the start menu without that auto-closing feature.

If you press the SHIFT key while clicking on the start menu, it will not close after launching an application. It will simply remain open which means that you can start as many applications as you want from the start menu. This is also nice if you want to delete several entries from the start menu. Normally deleting an entry would also close the start menu which would mean that you have to open it five times if you want to delete five items. If you press SHIFT this is not happening. You may now delete all folders in the start menu without it being closed after each process. [via gHacks]

  • Keep this philosophy in mind the next time you hear or are about to repeat a rumour.

In ancient Greece (469 - 399 BC), Socrates was widely lauded for his wisdom. One day the great philosopher came upon an acquaintance, who ran up to him excitedly and said, "Socrates, do you know what I just heard about one of your students?" Wait a moment," Socrates replied. "Before you tell me, I'd like you to pass a little test. It's called the Test of Three." "Test of Three?" "That's correct," Socrates continued. "Before you talk to me about my student let's take a moment to test what you're going to say. The first test is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?" "No," the man replied, "actually I just heard about it." "All right," said Socrates. "So you don't really know if it's true or not. Now let's try the second test, the test of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my student something good?" "No, on the contrary..." "So," Socrates continued, "you want to tell me something bad about him even though you're not certain it's true?" The man shrugged, a little embarrassed. Socrates continued, "You may still pass though because there is a third test - the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about my student going to be useful to me?" "No, not really..." "Well," concluded Socrates, "if what you want to tell me is neither True nor Good nor even Useful, why tell it to me at all?" The man was defeated and ashamed and said no more. This is the reason Socrates was a great philosopher and held in such high esteem. It also explains why Socrates never found out that Plato was sleeping with his wife.
